New summer staple

July 22, 2010

Summer surprise from GapI was on the phone with JG to let him know that I was walking to my car after work when he said, “I think you got a package from Gap.”

Ooh! I love getting mail, and packages in particular, but packages from the Gap have always boded well for me since becoming a Brand Enthusiast. I opened the box almost as soon as I got home and pulled out a bright green sand bucket with something rolled up inside.

It was a pale denim jean jacket in my size, and I wasn’t sure what to make of it. I admit, I may have snarked, “What year is it, 1982?” But really, is this stuff back in style?

[Sidenote: Recently, I answered a few questions for Gap, and one of them was, "What trends are you most looking forward to?" and I answered truthfully, "I don't know! I wish I were more trendy!" That is to say, just because I don't know that something is back in doesn't mean it isn't.]

I held out the jacket in front of me and cast it a wary eye. Could I pull this off without looking ridiculous? I decided to try a few outfits to find out.

Khakis and a black tee White skirt, striped top
White shorts, purple print top Turquoise knit dress

To my surprise, I didn’t look strangely unlike myself or as though I were trying too hard, although, the collar seemed to pop itself, which I can not even attempt to pull off. This was a case where something outside my normal mode worked much more easily than I expected. The jacket complemented a lot of my typical outfit formulas, which is hardly a revelation, as denim is a neutral, duh. It lightened my wardrobe, which tends to be dark for summer, and it pulled together more casual combinations, like shorts and a t-shirt. I realized that the pale denim jacket was the summer version of my fall/spring stand-by, the dark jean jacket. I could wear it over all of my sun dresses and as a light layer when I’m out in evening. Hello, new summer staple! Thanks, Gap!

If you would like a chance to incorporate a summer denim item into your wardrobe, here’s your chance! Courtesy of Gap, I’m giving away a voucher for a denim purchase of up to $69.50, and you can win it if you leave a comment on this post! Comments will close at 8pm Eastern Time on Sunday, July 25; only one entry per person. I will choose one winner randomly — good luck!

I received this jean jacket and the jeans voucher for free as part of my agreement to be a Brand Enthusiast for Gap through Brand About Town.

i wouldn’t have given that jacket a second glance if i had seen it hanging on the rack, but i must agree, it looks really good with all of your pictured outfits. i’ve had denim jackets in various shades over the years, including a pink one with matching skirt in sixth grade. i thought i was hot stuff.

I love it, it will work really well for air conditioned areas, but then I’m always cold!

Oh man, I would be excited if I got a package from Gap too! I like the looks you put together with your new jacket! :)

I can’t see the pictures (I think Yahoo/Flickr/etc. are down right now?) but it sounds adorable! Will make sure to check in later to look at the photos.

Yay for free Gap! That jacket definitely works with your outfits.

  6. July 22, 2010 11:17 am

Ooh, I think it looks really good (I especially like the bottom two outfits). Hooray brand enthusiasm!

  7. July 22, 2010 11:23 am

    1. I like the bottom left outfit with the shorts the best!
    2. Can I enter to win even tho I won your last book giveaway?
    3. Speaking of that book giveaway, I just realized that I never got the book! Bummer!! Hmm…
    4. Everything comes back into style eventually…except mullets.

It’s super cute with the shorts, I think!

  9. July 22, 2010 11:37 am

I love the jacket. It would have never occurred to me that it wasn’t back in style. I would have assummed Gap knew more than me. I am not trendy at all…but I want to be.

Oh, I am desperate for a new pair of jeans, and Gap is the only brand I like. So, PICK ME, pretty please. :)

And FWIW, I think I like the bottom two looks the best.

I have about two weeks left in regular jeans (by my estimates), and then I’m going to need some maternity pants. I’m crossing my fingers for this giveaway.

Super cute! I am glad denim jackets are still in style (or back in style). I’ve been wondering if I can wear either of the two (three, if you count the blazer-ish one) jean jackets I have hanging in my closet without looking ridiculous. They always survive even my most drastic wardrobe purges. And hey, we’re always accepting family members here at OPH’s denim jacket orphanage.

The jacket looks super cute on you! And how cute is the sand pail packaging? Cute idea! The folks at Brand About Town are so creative.

    {Also: pick me pretty please!}

I’m a big fan of the dark-wash denim jacket, and I have really loved a medium-wash blazer. These outfits are really great–but I just don’t know if I can pull it off. Will dutifully stop in Gap on my lunch and test it out. ;o)

OH i would have been the same way if they had sent me a jean jacket – not to mention I’d be like dude have they watched the weather channel for down here – its like 500 billion degrees – well not that hot but really. It looks good on you though – nice pairing with the outfits you tried it on with.

Wow! That jacket looks so good on you! Nice to know it’s versatile!

  17. July 22, 2010 6:04 pm

It does look good! I am crossing my fingers that I’ll be the winner again :) Happy baby to me?

I love the idea that you referenced the phrase “popped collar.” HEE! And it does look great. I love my old, too short, semi worn out (am I hinting enough?) jean jacket. As a soon to be self-poverty stricken graduate student, I could really use a Gap coupon… :)

  19. July 22, 2010 9:05 pm

I just…don’t know about that jacket. (Arrgh. Are the internetz going to say I’m mean?) That is all.

  20. July 23, 2010 12:06 am

Ok, seriously. If random generator picks Janssen again when I specifically ask it not to, I’m giving up.

I have to say, I love the outfits you’ve put together with this new jacket! Like you, I never would pick the jacket on my own, but it is pretty fabulous!

  21. July 23, 2010 8:13 am

I think that jacket looks super cute on you! Especially in the third picture, with the shorts. Very summer of 1989.

  22. July 23, 2010 9:36 am

That matches your outfits super well. I don’t think I could pull that off but I did recently indulge in a stripy Gap summer dress that I’m too nervous about wearing without something over the top. That could work?

    Very cute.

I wish I could get in on this Brand About Town thing but I think it’s US only?

I wear my dark jean jacket all the time…well never with jeans. I’m weird about 2 denims together. But I love all of your outfits. I like the 80′s-ness of it…it makes me want to watch some Saved By the Bell reruns I mean this in a good way.

I love that Gap proved you wrong! Teehee!

  25. July 24, 2010 3:57 pm

It looks great! I don’t think it looks 80s at all.

And I am so. very. poor. So I would love to be entered for some free goodies!

  26. July 25, 2010 3:23 pm

My health kick is leading me down the scale, which means more clothes shopping in my future as the sizes slip down as well. Free denim would be excellente! I like the jacket on you too!

I would love to add something cute to my blah summer wardrobe! And a jacket like that fits my style perfectly
