Kennett Square Blogger Invasion

September 16, 2011

Thanks to my endless wheedling, I had the exciting chance to hang out with two more fun blogger friends over the weekend! Heidi hopped a plane to Philadelphia, and I had a lovely time with her and the very awesome Laurel Sass. Between my trip to Salt Lake City and Heidi’s stint in Philadelphia, she and I have now spent time together twice in the space of 4 weeks. I suspect that this pace will be difficult to maintain.

Out on the townLaurel was nice enough to let us crash at her apartment, so we convened there before heading to dinner at a cozy, neighborhood tavern-like restaurant called … Kennett! “It’s our theme for the weekend,” Laurel explained. We were waiting for a bit for our dinners — gnocchi for Heidi, tagliatelle special for Laurel, and lamb burger for me — when our waitress came to the table and said, “I have to tell you, ladies, I put the orders in for this other table before yours by mistake, and that’s why they have their food already.”

We had drinks and plenty to talk about, so we quickly assured her that we were fine. The waitress seemed relieved, and she said, “Oh, good! Well, there’s an heirloom tomato salad on its way out to you, on the house.”

Ooh! It was an especially nice salad, too, with some kind of salty cured meat and an exotic olive oil whipped cream. “It’s, like, what olive oil wishes it could be,” Heidi murmured mid-bite.

It was quite an auspicious start to the weekend. That night stayed up too late chatting and then rolled out of bed for a big brunch at Sabrina’s Café. We ate between a guy with a chubby beagle and a couple with a friendly mutt. It all seemed very Philadelphia to me, and I was a tiny bit sad that I had to bow out of Saturday’s activities to kick off the Delaware football season with JG. (We won, so that helped.)

But no matter! The next day, Heidi and Laurel came down to Kennett Square to attend the famous Mushroom Festival! I have waxed poetic about this event, so I was a little worried that it wouldn’t live up to expectations. However, Kennett Square did us proud. In addition to the normal crafty vendors (Guy Who Makes Stuff Out of License Plates, Guy Who Sells Weird Ties, and Guy Who Makes Wind Chimes Out of Beer Bottles), there was a famous taco truck, fresh lemonade, and fried mushrooms. In the immortal words of Ina Garten, how bad can that be?

During the walk back to the house, Laurel said contentedly, “Those were some good eats.” Indeed!

I love showing off my town almost as much as hanging out with blogger friends. Who’s in for the next Kennett Square Blogger Invasion?

I would LOVE to visit you and Kennett Square some day. I don’t know when, but mark my words, it WILL happen.

What a fantastic weekend! Good friends, good food, good conversation. Can’t imagine anything better! (Except perhaps a distinct lack of humidity.)
